Surgical Options for Near Vision Correction

Eyecare Associates Continues to Lead the Area
in Offering the Latest Refractive Technology

metairie lasikEyecare Associates continues to be a leader in offering the latest technological advances available in refractive surgery. Having the latest technology is critical to achieving the best possible results. Only after these procedures are proven as effective and safe do our doctors offer these services to their patients. Our surgeons’ goal is to always provide the safest and most advanced care to their patients.

Additionally, with more and more individuals fast approaching the baby boomer age and beyond, reading glasses and all of the nuisances associated with them, have become an ever increasing problem. But, is there really a way to “throw away your reading glasses” and… for how long?
What treatment is best for you?

Several determining factors shape each individual’s specific situation. There is no one surgical procedure that is right for everyone. Your age, current visual correction, and your lifestyle, are all specific elements that determine which procedure your doctor will ultimately recommend to best meet your specific needs.

What surgical options are available?

Custom LASIK
We are pleased to offer Custom LASIK, the most precise laser vision correction measurement and treatment procedure available for nearsighted and farsighted individuals with or without astigmatism. This advanced laser vision procedure results in clear, crisp, precise vision. The highly sophisticated CustomVue Wavescan Technology provides an unprecedented degree of accuracy allowing the cornea to be sculpted 25 times more precisely than previous methods.

Mixed Astigmatism
In addition to FDA approval for myopia and hyperopia, the CustomVue procedure is now the only U.S. approved wave-front guided laser treatment for mixed astigmatism. This continued expansion of CustomVue allows our surgeons to treat more patients with what is believed to be the very best procedure available on the market today. CustomVue may give patients the opportunity to see more clearly than they could ever see with glasses or contacts.

Iris Registration Technology
VISX again leads the way with FDA approval for greater technological advances. Iris Registration Technology is the first iris-based, automated method of aligning and registering wavefront correction. The Iris Registration Tech-nology is an important advancement in wave-front guided LASIK, especially in patients who have a significant amount of astigmatism.

ReSTOR Multi-focal IOL Lens
The ReSTOR multi-focal lens is an FDA approved naturally focusing vision-correction lens replacement which allows the patient to see well at near, mid-range and far distances. ReSTOR is the most advanced intraocular lens (IOL) currently available. After having the natural lens of the eye removed and replaced with a ReSTOR IOL lens, the patient has the ability to see well at all distances with each individual eye. This procedure is available for those individuals who need cataract surgery or desire Refractive Lens Exchange.

Surgical Options for Near Vision Correction

Blended Vision LASIK
LASIK surgery has now received FDA approval for presbyopia. What does that mean? LASIK surgery can now be used to correct an individual’s non-dominant eye, allowing a person to see small, close objects, such as newspapers and menus, clearly and precisely. This procedure is called Monovision or Blended Vision. In some patients who see well at a distance, surgery will only need to be performed in the non-dominant eye.

How does Monovision or Blended Vision work? Our brains have the uncanny ability to see well near and far by using our dominant eye to see well in a distance and our non-dominant eye to see clearly when focusing on near objects.

Simulation of this procedure can be achieved during the pre-operative examination. This allows the patient to experience Blended Vision before the actual surgery is performed. For those individuals who would like this experience in the “real world” for a few days, Blended Vision can also attained by wearing contact lenses.

Additionally, CustomVue LASIK has also received FDA approval for farsightedness. Blended Vision is also attainable with the CustomVue procedure. Your doctor will discuss which option, conventional LASIK or CustomVue LASIK is right for you.

Conductive Keratoplasty (CK)
Conductive Keratoplasty, better know as CK, uses radio frequency energy to gently reshape the eye allowing the patient to see well up close. This procedure is effective for only a minor portion of the population. In farsighted individuals, both eyes are usually treated, however, in patients who are presbyopic, only the non-dominant eye is corrected, leaving the dominant eye unadjusted. This is also called blended vision. The patient then uses one eye for reading and the other for driving and viewing objects in a distance, much the same way as in Blended Vision LASIK.

Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)
RLE is a procedure that is very similar to cataract surgery. After having the natural lens of the eye removed and replaced with a ReSTOR IOL lens, the patient has the ability to see well at all distances. The ReSTOR IOL lens is a multi-focal lens designed to treat two conditions, presbyopia (near vision) and distance vision. RLE allows the patient to see well near and far with each individual eye. Before the procedure, the patient can simulate the results of the surgery by being fitted with multi-focal contact lens.

Many factors determine which procedure our doctors will ultimately recommend to you. Because of their vast knowledge and wealth of experience, they are able to recommend which treatment will be most beneficial to each of their patients. Remember your specific visual needs are as unique as you are. At Eyecare Associates, our goal is to always assist you in achieving your best personal vision!.
